Most instructional leaders are unlikely to argue things went exactly as planned the past 18 months. That’s OK. In fact, the entire experience has given more clarity in what types of leaders our schools need. The unpredictability of the 20-21 school year required leaders to embrace an agile work environment where mistakes were incorporated as learning opportunities and teacher autonomy fueled innovation.
How can instructional leaders learn from these experiences and continue to promote such resiliency? Steve Ventura recommends instructional leaders need to lead by example and model the school culture they expect. But what traits do leaders need to make that possible? According to Ventura, it comes down to three specific traits: integrity, consistency, and ability.
Reinforce such characteristics by:
Joining the professional learning process rather than just leading it.
Making it clear that mistakes are OK.
Providing teachers a level of autonomy rather than adopting top-down management.
Employing the entire team’s collective intelligence.
