The Big List of Discussion Strategies

It’s Tuesday, and you have a professional development session scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. Your focus is student engagement, specifically discussion strategies, and you want new ideas to make the presentation engaging for your adult learners. Additionally, you would like to provide them an experience with a student engagement strategy they can take and implement right away.
Jennifer Gonzalez’s “Big List of Class Discussion Strategies” is a terrific resource for teachers that can easily be adapted to spice up any professional development session or staff meeting. You might even consider designing a PD around the “The Big List,” modeling how to implement a few of the strategies. After all, we know adult learners thrive on relevant and immediately applicable information. What better way to ensure classroom application of new strategies than by direct experience and reflection?
Let’s return to your Tuesday dilemma. After reviewing the “The Big List,” you incorporate the Affinity Mapping strategy by posing the question, “How might we engage all students in class discussions?” and having participants generate and sort their responses. The ideas flow as your faculty members are immersed in thoughtful conversation. The next day you see implementation of the Affinity Mappying strategy in multiple classrooms. Win-win!
