Is it Okay to Wonder Here?

Teachers are master question creators. Armed with Bloom’s Taxonomy, Webb’s Depth of Knowledge, and Marzano’s “four levels,” we strive to create questions to check for understanding of basic facts and to encourage deeper thinking.
Yet, what if we considered the act of asking questions is itself powerful learning?
Education Week asked four teachers representing various grades and content areas, including bilingual education, how they inspire students to wonder through generating their own questions. The article, “10 Strategies for Encouraging Students to Ask Questions” (Ferlazzo, 10 May 2021), is the first of a four-part series on the topic.
Teaching students that their natural curiosity is welcome in your classroom not only authentically engages them in critical thinking, it also positions you as the facilitator rather than the direct instructor role. Win-win for everyone!
