Appreciating Teachers
Guest User
During “normal times” or BC (before COVID), Teacher Appreciation Week was filled with beautifully decorated sheet cakes in the break room and all manner of festivities large and small to express our gratitude for teachers.
As a school leader, you might have something similar planned this year, albeit appropriately socially distanced. And, no doubt the teachers will enjoy your thoughtfulness and efforts.
Yet, this past year has been unlike any other. Education Week authors invited teachers to share how they want to be appreciated this year and reported their findings in “We Asked Teachers How They Want to be Appreciated. Here’s What They Said” (Faheid, D. 4 May 2021).
Here are the highlights:
Personalize your appreciation
Give teachers a legitimate voice in decision-making
Extend them lots and lots of grace
As one teacher said, “I don’t want gifts…I don’t want stuff…but kindness in general would go a long way.”
And, school leader, THANK YOU for the support and care you provide teachers.
