Brain Bandwidth and Stress

In a recent ASCD article, “Bandwidth is the Key to Energy Effectiveness and Engagement,” authors Kise and Holm address the acceptance educators have that high levels of stress and burnout are just a part of our jobs. They point out the negative impact this notion has on our ability to be “effective, emotionally intelligent, and engaged in our work.”
The authors share that the key to combatting the stress that comes with the demands of our jobs is to foster our brain energy or bandwidth. Think of bandwidth as the energy that powers the prefrontal cortex of the brain. This is the place that controls the part of the brain we use to do many things including our ability to focus, be patient and empathetic, make good decisions, and practice self-care.
The article includes a “Brain-Bandwidth Quiz” to give you some insight into how stress and your job might be affecting you, and some very specific information and strategies to support you and your staff as you all move forward
