A Self-Care Check-up

Guest User

You visit the doctor for a physical each year, but when was the last time you had a self-care check-up? According Maslow’s “Hierarchy of Needs” (1943, 1971), we need our physiological, safety, belonging, and esteem needs met before we can reach our full potential with self-actualization and transcendence.

When change occurs, such as the pandemic, it is normal to feel that our needs are not being met.  In fact, we might not even realize that we act a certain way until we dig a little deeper to see which needs are being threatened.

You can conduct your own self-care “check-up” by completing the “Self-Care Survey: Starting Point” (Solution Tree, 2018).  Consider taking the survey in the morning, midday and in the evening to see if your needs change based on your setting.

After completing the survey, think about how you might improve any areas where you scored low. Through self-reflection and consulting with friends or colleagues, identify what you may be able to change or improve on so you can reach your full potential.
