You Have to Choose..

Having a choice is great when you are on the “Price is Right,” but in real life, making some choices can be tough. As leaders, we are asked to make difficult decisions that impact students and educators. Mark Twain said, “Do the right thing. It will gratify some people and astonish the rest.” If only it were so simple as “doing the right thing.” When faced with seemingly impossible choices, you may ask yourself whether the decision feels right and balanced, yet you must also ensure you are operating within legal bounds.
The Center for Ethical Leadership defines this process as, “Ethical leadership,” which is “knowing your core values and having the courage to live them in all parts of your life in service of the common good.” The five Principals for Ethical Leaders are defined as purpose, pride, patience, persistence, and perspective in The Power of Ethical Management (1988, Blanchard & Peale).
We invite you to delve more deeply into Blanchard and Peale’s five principles, with an eye towards examining your ethical leadership. After all, your choices truly make a difference.
