Types of Elections
School districts hold four kinds of elections. Each follows its own section of Arizona law.
Voters in each district elect the residents who serve on their local governing board. Our office provides informational packets and filing support to new candidates and incumbents.
A district governing board may call a bond election, and must call one when petitioned by 15 percent of the district’s school electors, based on the poll list from the last annual school election.
When a district’s proposed budget exceeds its aggregate budget limit, the governing board orders an override election, held at least 90 days after it is ordered. The board also prepares an alternate budget.
Qualified electors may petition to require a seated governing board member to stand for election before the end of their term.
When a governing board seat is vacant, whether mid-term or because no candidate filed, the County School Superintendent may appoint a qualified elector from the district to fill it.
