Dear Educators/Parents: Thank you for taking the time to use our resources. Use these questions as a starting point to help your students develop understanding of todays topic. Please keep in mind that answers will vary based on your student's grade level. Remember the most important part of learning is having our students experience productive struggle as they develop their own understanding based on their research and prior knowledge.

Pre-Lesson Questions:

  1. Write down everything that you know about how the body makes food into energy.
  2. What are the four major macromolecules found in food?
  3. Look in your refrigerator and/or food pantry and select 10 foods and classify them into one of the four major macromolecules.
  4. Research how the body makes food into energy. Create a diagram that explains how food is converted into energy.

Post-Lesson Activity: Imagine that you are a nutritionist and one of your patients recently had a heart attack. Take one of your favorite family recipes and re-write the recipe substituting ingredients that would help your patient’s overall health. Explain why you made the ingredient substitution and how this substitution will help them with their overall health. You can create a video/tiktok/snapchat and/or explain it to someone that you know who has had a heart attack and/or anyone else you think would benefit from the information. You can take this a step further and try cooking your recipe to share with your family.
