2018 Election Documents
Candidate Information Packet
The Office of the Maricopa County School Superintendent provides informational packets to interested candidates. The packets contain valuable information designed to guide both new candidates and incumbents through the process of becoming a governing board member.
When printing the candidate information packet, ensure the Nonpartisan Nomination Petition will print as “Actual Size.” Pursuant to Arizona Revised Statute § 16-315 (A), signature lines are to be ½ an inch apart. The document should be printed double sided with the petition signatures on one side and circulator information on the opposite side. as seen below.
School Governing Board Qualifications
Pursuant to Arizona Revised Statute §15- 421 (C), a person is eligible to run for a school governing board seat in Arizona when they meet the following qualifications:
Registered voter in the state of Arizona
Resident of the school district for at least one year immediately preceding the day of election
School governing board members cannot be an employee of the school district or be a spouse of a school district employee, including a person who directly provides certified or classified services to the school district as an employee of a third-party contractor.
Filing Petition Signatures
The candidate filing period for the November 6, 2018 election begins July 9, 2018 at 8:00 a.m. and closes August 8, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. Petitions presented before or after the established filing period CANNOT be accepted (A.R.S. § 16-311 (B)). Candidates may file election documents at the Maricopa County School Superintendent's office or the Maricopa County Elections Department.
Candidates must file the following original documents with either office in order for their name to appear on the ballot:
Nomination Paper/Affidavit of Qualification
Nonpartisan Nomination Petition(s)
**Candidates for Two (2) Year Terms MUST designate the term expiration date following the name of the office on the petitions prior to gathering signatures, as well as on the nomination papers.**
Candidate Filing Appointments
Candidates may schedule a half-hour filing appointment with our office. Candidates without an appointment will be taken on a first come, first serve basis. The first appointment available is July 9, 2018 at 8:30 a.m. and the last appointment available is 4:00 p.m. on August 8, 2018. Please click on the image above to schedule an appointment.
Disclaimer: The Office of the County School Superintendent closes at 4 p.m. every Friday. The last available appointment will be 3:30 p.m. on Fridays ONLY.
Statements of Organization (Campaign Finance)
A Political Committee Statement of Organization must be filed with either the Maricopa County Elections Department or the Office of the Maricopa County School Superintendent once a candidate’s committee has reached a combined total of $1,100 in contributions and expenses. This includes the use of the candidate’s own monies. Campaign Finance forms are included in the candidate packet and are also available for download online at http://recorder.maricopa.gov/elections/candidatecampaigninfo.aspx. Candidates can gather petition signatures without forming a committee.
Campaign finance trainings for non-partisan and school governing board candidates in collaboration with Maricopa County Elections Department will be offered throughout the campaign season. See the flyer for dates and times. All dates and times listed below are subject to change; please refer to the Maricopa County Recorder's Office website for any updates.
Candidate 10-Day Challenge Period
Immediately following the candidate filing period, a candidate's filing for candidacy (qualifications, nomination papers, petitions, etc.) can be challenged with the Maricopa County Superior Court. The 10-day challenge period for the 2018 Governing Board Elections is August 9, 2018 to 5:00 p.m. on August 22, 2018. Process instructions are available here.
A write-in candidate must file the following original document with our office by 5:00 p.m. on August 22, 2018:
Nomination Paper/Affidavit of Qualification/Campaign Finance Statement, which must be notarized
Pursuant to Arizona Revised Statute § 15-421 (F), each candidate whose name has been certified to appear on the election ballot/write-in list shall submit the following:
1. A recent photograph.
2. A typewritten or electronic statement, not to exceed 500 words.
3. A disclosure of any relationships by affinity, by consanguinity or by law to the third degree that exist between the candidate and any current governing board members or other candidates for election to the same governing board.
Certified Candidates may begin submitting the information described above NO EARLIER THAN August 9, 2018 and NO LATER THAN 5:00 p.m. on September 13, 2018.
A signed hard copy to of the candidate's statement can be delivered to our office or may be sent via email from the candidate's email address on file with The Office of the Maricopa County School Superintendent. Email SchoolElections@maricopa.gov
Installing Campaign Signs
State law requires utilities to be marked before signs go up. If you're running for office, supporting a political candidate or working for or against a ballot measure, you must know "what is below" before signs go up!
